In 2010 I was commissioned by the Northampton Shoe Museum to made a donations box. My idea for this automata was to show both the traditional and modern (injection moulding)processes involved in making shoes. I added a joke at the end when the robot, operating the new machine, malfunctions and collapses to the floor.
I incorperated one of the museums most popular exhibts, a pair or Union Jack Ginger Spice boots. The boxes behind the shoemaker have the names of all the famous people who have their shoes on show at the museum. The automata is called ‘The Shock of the New’ and took three months to make. You can see details of it’s construction on my blog.
