This automata collection box was commissioned by Plymouth Art Gallery and Museum in 2008. It features a famous local explorer and collector, Gertrude Benham on one of her many exotic and dangerous adventures.
I used an MP3 player to produce Gertrude's voice and the leopards growl. The bird song comes from a commercially available mechanism.
The whole cycle lasts for 25 seconds and the automata took just over one month to make. It will be installed on a plinth with a perspex cover

Hi Keith
Today, Jan and I had the extreme pleasure of experiencing your excellent automata at Plymouth Museum. I was delighted that it is in such a prominent position which it very much deserves. I used all my spare change studying the mechanism! I have been interested in all things automata for some time and feel the need very strongly to have a go myself. (I have been collecting 'bits' for years to this end). I just need a kick start!
Kind regards
